James F. Keene Commissioning Project

to create a new work in honor of James F. Keene, composed by scott boerma

Illinois Bands and Alice Keene are pleased to announce a partnership to support the creation of a new work in memory of James Keene. Scott Boerma has agreed to compose the piece and dedicate it to Prof. Keene, in honor of his legacy and contributions to our program and the band medium. The projected completion date is December 2027, allowing a premiere and additional performances during 2028 when Prof. Keene would have celebrated his 80th birthday. The work will be Grade 4.5–5 and 6–8 minutes in duration, in hopes that it will be accessible to a large number of ensembles for future performances.

Alice Keene has provided a leading gift to jumpstart the commission, and we aim to raise approximately $9,000 to fund this new work. Any funds raised beyond the necessary amount will sustain the James F. Keene Commissioning Fund and support future projects led by Illinois Bands.

If you would like to contribute to this commission, please complete the form below and make a donation to the James F. Keene Commissioning Fund. Within the form, include “Keene/Boerma Commission” as the gift designation so we know to earmark your contribution toward this project. A list of all contributors will be included in the score, and donations in any amount are helpful, meaningful, and appreciated! Everyone is encouraged to contribute to support the project as a way to remember Prof. Keene. Individuals or institutions contributing $200 or more will receive the score and parts, and a one-year exclusivity period following the premiere in which to perform the piece.

We hope you will join us in celebrating Prof. Keene's remarkable legacy by helping bring this meaningful new work to life.
